This is my diary of a trip I undertook in 2010, in which I hitchhiked and camped across New Zealand over several months. I wrote a sentence about everybody who picked me up. I experimented afterwards with ways to develop the idea, ranging from collaborations with local photographers to interactive maps to page-long short stories on each character.
For this piece in Renegade Magazine, I felt the block-of-text approach really captured the enormity of the project. The sentences hint at stories and adventures that have been largely lost from memory, so the reader’s imagination has as much artistic licence over these characters as I do.
