The Key to the Marae

This is an article I had in Traveller Magazine in the run up to the publication of Across New Zealand in 140 Hitches. The hitch took place in Gisborne towards the end of my trip, and it holds a special place in my memory because of the way Harry, Scruffy Mullet and the house owner so casually let me tag along to their social plans. It was one of the easiest displays of hospitality I have ever witnessed. I always recommend Gisborne as a New Zealand tip, especially to anyone keen to experience genuine Maori culture.
